Navy Hotel Standards

Project overview

This project was about creating consistency and comfort for service members across the globe.

The Navy sought to establish a unified set of hotel design standards that could be applied worldwide, ensuring reliable quality and guest experience no matter the location. The challenge was to balance global brand and service expectations with sensitivity to regional culture, so that each property felt both familiar and contextually authentic.

The new standards provide a clear design roadmap for future projects, supporting functionality, comfort, and a sense of home for those who serve. To aide in the desire for each site to have a role in the aesthetic the standard focused on three design concepts.

Sailors Arsenal, Sailors Craft, and Tailored Character represent three design lenses for Navy hospitality. Arsenal embodies strength and precision through bold, durable materials. Craft highlights tradition and human touch with tactile, handcrafted details. Tailored Character brings refinement and adaptability, balancing sophistication with local cultural expression. Together, they create a consistent yet flexible design language that ensures comfort, identity, and pride across Navy properties worldwide.

Role

As Senior Project Interior Designer, I led the team through programming, concept development, and design documentation. My responsibilities included aligning design decisions with both functional needs and cultural context, ensuring that the standards reflected the identity and mission of the Marine Corps and Navy while allowing for local expression. I collaborated closely with stakeholders to create guidelines that now serve as the foundation for consistent, welcoming, and enduring hospitality environments worldwide.
